Quite a week of firsts:
- First collisions seen in the LHC by all experiments (CMS, ATLAS, LHCb, ALICE). The collisions were at "injection energy" of 450GeV. They circulated one bunch per beam, tuned successively so that they would meet at each of the points on the ring where one of these experiments resides. We got ours on Monday evening the 23rd (the date of our 7th anniversary!). By Thursday all of the experiments and LHC showed their first results in a bragfest - you can see them for yourself at this link. Not to brag myself - no, not me! - but slide #4 of the CMS presentation shows results from work that I've been doing lately, and the bottom plot on slide #18 was put together by my adviser.
- Yesterday the LHC, for the first time, became the world's highest energy particle accelerator, breaking the Tevatron's record. Here's a particularly humorous account, albeit in typically cheeky Brit fashion.
- On Thursday last week it was announced that the paper I had been working on all summer and fall, my first ever peer-reviewed paper ('my' is not exclusive here), was finally made public (not the same as being published, still waiting for completion of the journal review), you can see it here.
- Bragging rights to the first official public paper on physics results from first collisions at the LHC goes to Johnny-on-the-Spot, being the ALICE experiment, submitted a mere five days after the data was taken!
Would you believe that there exists in the world a Christian Austrian gospel-bluegrass guitarist? I wouldn't have, but then it's a big world, isn't it. K and I saw this guy in concert yesterday - here's a youtube video of one of the songs we heard yesterday.
